***** IMPORTANT UPDATE *****
UPDATE JANUARY 2023: The Avance XL was one of Philips’ original models (and mine still runs like a dream!) but it is no longer available. Instead please see:

I also highly recommend the Cosori Pro II Air Fryer, a large capacity, high quality air fryer at a very reasonable price:
The HD9240 is a medium capacity model, between the standard size Philips HD9641 and the extra large 4-quart Philips XXL. It’s a good air fryer at a very good price. My Philips Airfryer XL Review covers all the details!

(See explanation about this rating below.)
The large sized Philips Airfryer XL, Model HD9240, is part of the Avance collection, and it’s from the company considered by many to be the “original” air fryer manufacturer. This is a full featured 1,800W air fryer with a 3.5 quart cooking capacity and a digital interface. It even includes a “smart” preset button that you can use to save custom settings for a favorite recipe that you cook most often.
Be warned that it’s not a small appliance, but if you’ve got the space it could well become one of the most used gadgets in your kitchen. Air fryers offer you a great way to cook a variety of foods that are delicious and healthier too. Read on to find out if this model is the best choice for you.
Looking for an even larger model? See the Philips HD9650 model and other XL models in our Large Air Fryer Comparison Chart, or check out the Philips XXL model on Amazon.
Features
- 3.5 Quart Capacity
- 1,800 Watts
- Digital Touch-Screen Controls
- Adjustable Temperature up to 390°
- 60 Minute Timer
- Auto Shut-Off & Alert Signal
- Preset Cooking Functions
- “Smart” Preset for Favorite Setting
- On/Off Switch and Power Indicator Light
- Patented Rapid Air Technology
- Dishwasher Safe Parts
- Internal Cord Storage
- Non-Slip Feet
- 1 Year Limited Warranty
For many people, one of the most important advantages of the Philips Airfryer XL is size. Compared to other models by this manufacturer, this one is considerably larger, giving you almost 50% more in interior capacity.
This model also includes a preset button that allows you to save custom settings. If you have a favorite food that you cook often, you can use this button to program the unit to memorize those particular time and temperature settings.
→ Note that this feature does not give you unlimited options. You can change your memorized settings any time, but the unit can only “remember” one preset at a time.
At 1,800 Watts, the Philips Airfryer XL is about 30% more powerful than smaller models from this manufacturer. For comparison, the HD9220 and HD9230 are 1425W. (For complete details you may wish to read this review of the HD9220 and HD9230.)
As you can see from the list above, this model boasts all the built-in features Philips is known for. That includes its patented Rapid Air Technology which is designed to circulate hotter air faster and produce better results. This same technology is used in other Philips models, and they have a reputation for cooking evenly and quickly so that foods are properly done on the inside with a nice crispy outside.
The HD9240 also has non-slip feet, cord storage, dishwasher safe parts, and all the other design features that make for convenient and easy use.

What’s Included with the Philips HD9240
No additional accessories are included. The Airfryer XL does include a booklet, but it contains only a few recipes, so don’t count on getting a full cookbook. (For links to free recipes and also to cookbooks for sale, see our Air Fryer Cookbook & Recipe Guide.)
Optional Accessories for XL Air Fryers
Important: Note that due to the size difference in Philips airfryers, you need to be sure to purchase the correct accessory for your specific model.
Grill Plate
Grill Pan for Philips Avance, XL (model 9240): Non-stick coated and dishwasher safe, the grill pan has a perforated, ridged surface designed to allow for air flow when searing or “grilling” meats, seafood or vegetables.
Air fryers do not have the same searing capability as grills, but if you don’t mind the cost, this grill plate does a nice job on meats and foods like fresh pineapple. That is, it doesn’t achieve the kind of sear you can get on a super hot griddle, but it does let you get a nice exterior on something like beef steak or chicken strips.
Double Layer Rack
Airfryer Double Layer Rack with Skewers for Avance, XL (model 9240): This non-stick coated rack allows you to double the available cooking surface inside your airfryer so you can cook more at a time. The included skewers can be used for meat or veggie kabobs. Both rack and skewers are also dishwasher safe.
Note that racks can be difficult to use. If you need to check food for doneness during cooking, you can’t see the bottom layer. Removing the rack while it’s hot can be awkward.
Baking Pan
I’ve written an entire post on why the baking pan is such a great accessory. To date Philips has yet to make such a pan for its XL model. However, there are (finally!) some other options.
For a baking pan or a set that includes multiple tools please see Universal Air Fryer Accessories – All Sizes, Best Value.
On a personal note… In my experience the racks are more awkward than useful. The muffin tin might come in handy. I absolutely love baking in my air fryer, but for muffins I always use my silicone baking cups.

Customer Reviews
Explanation About Star Rating
A strange thing happened with this model. As of October, 2022, the original Amazon listing is gone, along with the 1,600+ customer reviews of it. The new listing is the same model but shows only 12 customer ratings with an average of 3.7 stars. Since I believe that older Amazon reviews were more legitimate than current ones, the information below is based on those older, original reports from verified owners.
Now that this model has been out for a while it has garnered hundreds of reviews – well over 1,600 – and 80% of them are positive. In those that are negative, several of the worst ratings were given by people who were expecting their home breaded chicken pieces to turn out tasting exactly like fast food deep-fried chicken. Other very low reviews were filtered out of the average because they involved complaints like “it’s too big and overpriced”, just a matter of opinion that has nothing to do with product quality or performance.
A few reviewers gave lower ratings because they were disappointed to discover there is a learning curve. That is to be expected since air frying is actually a different cooking method that may take a little getting used to. I’m the first to admit that I tend to get set in my ways, but every now and then it really is worth taking the time to learn a new trick.
One example is in the complaints you’ll find about foods turning out too dry. Remember that Philips does not claim that you can cook completely oil free. The point is that you only need a tiny bit of oil. In many cases all it takes to prevent foods from drying out is a very light spritzing of oil before cooking. Many foods also cook very quickly in air fryers, so these folks may be overdoing it.
The only other legitimate complaint is from users who experienced smoking during cooking, and a few reports claim it was enough to trigger a smoke alarm. This is usually caused by a build-up of grease from cooking high-fat foods. During cooking, you can add a little water to the air fryer drawer to stop the smoking. Between uses, the cooking drawer should be cleaned thoroughly. If excessive smoke is a problem, you may also need to clean the heating element. (See the this page for instructions on interior cleaning. Under “FAQs, scroll down, click “Show more”, and then click the link “How to clean the inside/heating element of my Philips Airfryer”. Also, to see how easy these appliances are to clean, check out “How to Clean Your Philips Airfryer” on this website.)
Certain foods such as coconut tend to produce smoke no matter how you cook them. My solution to this issue is to place my air fryer next to (not onto) my range, where I can take advantage of the exhaust fan.
Otherwise, the HD9240 gets the same high praise from consumers as the other airfryer models made by Philips. It receives excellent marks for typical foods such as French fries and chicken fingers. Many owners concede that for other foods it may take a bit of experimenting, but overall they’re delighted with results on a wide range of dishes, from coconut shrimp to meatballs. Most agree that once you get the hang of cooking in an air fryer, you’ll get much more use from it than you may have expected.
As a Philips owner myself, I am absolutely sold on this brand because of its performance and durability. If you’ve read my other Philips reviews you know that while writing The Air Fryer Bible, my co-author and I ran our air fryers almost non-stop for months. Those units never let us down and to this day still work perfectly.
(Back to Top)Pros & Cons
Pros

- digital controls, including custom preset
- timer, auto shut-off, & other convenience features

Philips Airfryer XL Review: Summary
There is no question that reducing the amount of fat in your diet is a wise decision for your health. The trade-offs are that you may need a little patience learning a new cooking method, and you need to have reasonable taste expectations. Airfried chicken may not be an exact match for deep fried, but most (including yours truly!) agree that the very slight difference is well worth enjoying all the benefits of healthier eating.
The Philips Airfryer XL, model HD9240 in the Avance collection, is one of the larger capacity units on the market. It offers all the basic features you should expect, plus extra power and some unique conveniences such as the preset cooking function. Dishwasher safe parts make cleanup easy. This model is a good choice for fried food lovers who want to eat healthier, and especially for those who entertain often or cook for a family. For quality, performance and durability, my experience with the Philips brand has been 100% positive.

Where can I buy this model HD9240 in Indonesia as I couldn’t find it in philips Indo Web?
Does this item including bucket pan like manual item HD9220?
Susan says
I suggest you try contacting the company directly and ask both of your questions. Good luck!
Dawn says
Can’t Phillips give us a quart measurement for comparison? That is the only thing holding me back from ordering one for a gift. It seems like it would be easy enough to compare baskets.
Susan says
I couldn’t agree more! And finally, Philips has started listing this as a 3.5 quart model. The above review has been updated to reflect this change.

Can I do eggrolls with the air fryer?
Do I need to get the XL extra large capacity if I want to do 5 or 10 eggrolls at a time?
Thanks.
Susan says
Yes, eggrolls work great in an air fryer. Obviously, the number you can cook at once will depend on size. My typical egg rolls are about 5″ long and an inch or less in diameter. Five of those would fit in a regular size air fryer. To cook 10 at once you probably need an XL air fryer. It is possible to stack them if you lay the second layer crisscross. (Think of a tic tac toe board.) If you do that it may take them longer to cook, and you will have to stop to rearrange to be sure all sides of all rolls get crispy. Also be aware that air fryers are extremely good at reheating foods, so cooking in batches is always an option. That is, right before the second batch is done, toss the first batch in on top of them to reheat, and they all come out hot at once.
Hope that helps,
Susan

Is the Power Air Fryer the same as the Air FryerPhilips Airfryer XL Avance XL Digital HD9240?
Are they one in the same?
Susan LaBorde says
Hi Lorraine,
No, the two models you name are not even close to the same. Philips is a top-of-the-line model from the company that’s been making air fryers for years. The Power Air Fryer is the “as seen on TV” model.
Hope that helps,
Susan
Victor says
Good Morning,
I want to know if you can open the draw to check on the browning of foods? I want to cook things like spring rolls that only need short time cooking.
If you can open the draw does one have to reset the timing/ temperature?
Susan LaBorde says
Hi Victor,
Yes! All Philips models have a “pause” button, which allows you to pause cooking and open the drawer to check your food. When you close the drawer and resume cooking, the temperature remains just as you had set it, and the timer starts where it left off. You do not have to re-set anything or start over.
Thanks for asking, and I hope that helps!
Susan
