About Air Fryers
Air fryers have finally become a hit in the U. S., but they have been hugely popular in Australia and Europe for years. Perhaps the best recommendation comes from our friends down under, where lots of households use air fryers far more often than microwaves.
Cooking with little to no oil is obviously healthier, but air fryers offer some other benefits too, including:
- They don’t stink up your house like traditional frying does.
- Cleanup is easier – no grease splatter all over your range, counter, vent hood, floor, clothes, skin, and anything else within splatter/popping distance.
- You don’t have to fool with quarts and quarts of used oil and figuring out how to best dispose of it.
- Your kitchen won’t heat up nearly as much – a big plus in summer or humid climates.

Your Heart Will Thank You … But What About Your Taste Buds?
As you might expect, taste is a matter of, well, taste. Some of us southern-fried-to-the-bone folks actually like the flavor you get from heavily breaded foods that have been drenched in grease. We can’t help it. We were raised on it. We’re experts at taking perfectly healthy foods and turning them into a cardiologist’s worst nightmare: fried squash, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, fried eggplant, fried apple pies (or peach or cherry or blueberry).
But then, contrary to popular belief, just because we talk slow doesn’t mean we’re stupid. All of those much beloved comfort foods aren’t so comforting when you realize how bad they are for you. That makes it a lot easier to keep an open mind.
In fact, how well you like the taste of air fried food may depend in part on your attitude. If you expect an exact, perfect match for deep fried, you may be disappointed. A good air fryer will give you excellent results on crispiness, but the flavor will differ slightly from the grease-laden deep fried version. One good ole boy from Texas put it very well in his review. He said that it comes very close to the flavor of deep fried, and knowing how much better it is for his heart, he’s perfectly satisfied and glad to have the option to eat fried foods again. Another made this great point: if it tastes 90% as good and it’s 90% better for your health, that’s a pretty darn good trade-off.
That said, you’ll also discover that some foods actually taste better when cooked in an air fryer. Give them a try, and you will be amazed at the results.

Which is the Best Air Fryer?
Finding the best airfryer to suit your needs and preferences won’t take you forever because this is not a complicated kitchen gadget. For the most part, the major differences in models boils down to interior capacity, price, and the quality of the results you’ll get. The only “bells & whistles” involved are timers, temperature controls, and automatic shut-off. Most of the popular models have all three.
An exception is the T-Fal. It does have a timer and shut-off feature, but it has no adjustable temperature control. You have no options and will have to cook everything at the same temperature. It is also uniquely designed to work using an interior stirring paddle, and opinions on that are quite strong – consumers either love it or hate it.
Also worth noting is that the timer on the Big Boss Oil-less Fryer cannot be easily cancelled. If you’re interested in that model be sure to read our Big Boss review to understand how that timer works.
A long-time best seller on the market is the Philips brand, one of the original air fryer manufacturers. Philips makes top-of-the-line airfryers, and when it comes to taste and crispiness, Philips has an excellent reputation for doing the best job on a good variety of foods. However – and that’s a big “however” – the Philips models are also the most expensive. If you want to spend a lot less, there are some other very good options.
One lower priced model that has been on the market for a number of years is the GoWISE USA 8-in-1 Electric Air Fryer. It’s loaded with great features and has earned above average consumer ratings. Read the complete review to decide for yourself, but when it comes to getting the most for your money, the GoWISE just might be the best deal for you.
Note that the GoWISE air fryer is often sold out. It usually sells for under $125. Beware of price gouging from sellers trying to take advantage of supply shortages.
Two rising stars in the market are from Cosori and Ninja. Both companies jumped on the air fryer bandwagon to offer their versions of this popular appliance, and both have quickly become best sellers. Cosori makes a 4QT air fryer and a Pro II 5.8QT Max XL air fryer. Both of these very reasonably priced models get excellent ratings and have earned the “Amazon’s Choice” badge.
UPDATE: I now own the larger Cosori model and I highly recommend it. It’s a quality air fryer at a very reasonable price, and I have been extremely pleased with mine.
The other extremely popular model is by Ninja. This well-known manufacturer also makes two sizes: the Ninja Air Fryer AF101 with 4QT capacity; and the Ninja AF161 Max XL Air Fryer with 5.5QT capacity. The XL model sells for less than $150, which is an excellent price, and based on customer reviews, both models live up to the Ninja brand’s reputation for quality.
Finally, one thing to keep in mind is that air fryers are unique, and for most of us it’s a completely new cooking method. Chances are that you will enjoy your appliance a lot more if you get a good air fryer cookbook. Unfortunately, so many of the cookbooks you find on Amazon are pure garbage, and they’re full of recipes that won’t even work in an air fryer. i purchased the Bib Boss airfryer without having done much research–not my usual strategy. Well, after figuring ho. w to set it up and turn it on, I found the fryer super easy to operate and the results have been great. I did read your caveat about the timer so I was careful not to make an error. However, altogether, great product for a nice price. I wonder if the people who rated this fryer might be different from those willing to shell out $300+ for a similar product. Honestly, I would have been in that expensive group, but I got lucky getting the first and only one that showed up on the sidebar during some websearch. So far I give the product 5 stars. I’m about to try making veggie chips–let’s see if I change my mind.

I’m sorry I can’t help you on this one. There is almost zero information available on this particular product. It is not even included in the product listings on the manufacturer’s website, and as far as I can tell it is only available online from Amazon.
One concern I would have about this model is that the warranty information is not readily accessible online. For warranty details you have to contact the Amazon third-party seller who is listing this product. (This air fryer is sold by Dbroth and fulfilled by Amazon.)
At present Amazon is listing it as a “#1 New Release”. It has an excellent average customer rating of 4.7, but keep in mind that this is from only 6 reviews. Personally, before I invest my dollars I like to see a lot more feedback on a product, and feedback from numerous sources in addition to Amazon. Besides that, if you read those 6 reviews you’ll see that one of them simply wrote to complain that all the other 5 reviews sound fake. I must admit I tend to agree.
All that said, it could be an excellent air fryer. It just hasn’t yet earned enough consumer comments, questions and reviews to have established a track record.

GOwise vs Avalon???????? Im leaning toward the Avalon but can anyone shed light on something im missing? any reason the GOwise would be a better buy? I could care less about footprint or digital readout. and the Avalon has higher rating with just as many reviews on amazon, more accessories and larger capacity…. Any thoughts?

A note from the editor: Both reviews have just been updated (11/10/15).
The GoWISE model still has very little feedback, and its overall rating has dropped from 4.2 to 4.1. The company’s customer service continues to monitor online reviews and appears to quickly respond to any negative comments with offers to help or in some cases provide replacement parts. The Avalon, on the other hand, is growing in popularity, and with much more feedback now available it maintains its high overall average rating of 4.6*. You can see more in the Avalon Bay review.

Hello. I would like to have your insight in regards to the Power Air Fryer XL 5.3 QT. It has basically all the features of the Avalon and GoWise (timer, presets and auto shut off) and can be bought for $149.99 on internet and Bed Bath & Beyond ($120 with their 20% discount). In fact, their panel display and functions are exactly like the GoWise’s. I’m wondering if these machines are made by the same people.

The only thing I can tell you about the Power Air Fryer XL is that it is one of those “as seen on TV” brands that is sold by Tristar products. Tristar does not offer information about where their products are manufactured (at least none that is easily located). Avalon Bay doesn’t provide manufacturing info either. GoWISE USA is a distributing company located in the United States, but their air fryer is actually made in China.
In my opinion the most important thing to be aware of on the Power Air Fryer XL is the warranty. You can read about it here: http://www.powerairfryer.com/customer.php” – but to sum it up, the product has a 60 day warranty, and if service is needed then you must pay return shipping plus handling costs. The site used to state that the handling fee was $19.99, but the amount is no longer specified.
That alone will be a deal breaker for a lot of people. However, to help you compare, I just updated the table above to show the warranty of each of the air fryer models reviewed on this site.
I agree about the similar looks, and I’m sorry I can’t answer whether the manufacturer could be the same, but I do hope this helps.

“CooksEssentials” products are sold exclusively by QVC, so the only information available is on the QVC site. I notice that this particular air fryer only has a 60 day warranty, and there are no reviews to give any idea about its quality or performance. As I understand it, CooksEssentials products are re-branded items made by various manufacturers, so you don’t have any way of knowing who actually makes the product.
That’s about all I can offer. Since this air fryer isn’t sold by any of the big box stores or online retailers, there is no consumer feedback on it. I’m sorry I cant tell you more, but I hope that helps.

The philips viva collection list the size as 1.8 lb. Which everone calls small. What would that be compared to other airfryers that list in liter or qts. Is it at least a 3 . something

If my math is correct (?), I believe it’s more accurate to say the 1.8 lb. Philips models are close to 3 quarts (2.99 quarts). It’s probably more helpful to just give you the cooking basket dimensions. I own the Philips 9230, and the basket measures 7.5 inches wide by 7.5 inches long by 3.5 inches in height. That is, it is a 7.5 inch square basket (with rounded corners) and it is 3.5 inches deep.

Please rate the 5.3qt Cooks essentials air fryer. Who makes this for QVC? It looks a little like the Philips 5.8qt air fryer. How does it compare to other large air fryers? How durable is the nonstick coating on any of the air fryers, especially given the fact that some come with stainless steel accessories? Are there any large air fryers available with stainless steel cooking surfaces.

Please see my response to Kristy in the comments above. There is no way to research “CooksEssentials” products because they are sold exclusively by QVC, and QVC does not reveal the name of the actual manufacturer. The only information about this air fryer is on the QVC sales page – it has a 60 day warranty, and its average rating from QVC buyers is 3.5.
The non-stick coating on my Philips 9230 is holding up extremely well, but that can vary with different manufacturers. When I find a significant number of reports about problems occurring with normal use, that is always added to the individual product reviews on this site.
I am not aware of any air fryers with stainless steel cooking surfaces. Keep in mind that for the most part you will either shake the basket during cooking or turn food over with tongs. You won’t be doing a lot of stirring, and typically that is what can damage non-stick surfaces. Occasionally you may need to use a spatula to remove food from the basket, so it’s probably best to use something like silicone for that.
The only way you could get any more info on this particular air fryer would be to contact QVC directly.

I bought the snack (tray) basket for my Actifry a couple weeks ago and love, love, love it! Been using it everyday. It turns around and drops the oil to the pan below, everything comes out crunchy all the way around, unlike other airfryers that you have to shake or manually turn the food. Highly recommend for Actifry owners. Happy New Year & Happy Airfrying everyone?!!!

I see the Gowise sells handles on their website and two size cake pans. I looked because Amazon was out of stock. It looks like you can use liquid if you have the cake pan

First, please let me clarify something. Right now, the GoWise model shown in the above chart is only available in white. The black model is sold out everywhere. I changed the links above to go directly to the white model, so hopefully it will be easier to find. (And if you compare prices, I’m pretty certain you’ll want to shop Amazon for the air fryer.)
On the GoWise site, that’s a replacement basket and handle that you’re seeing. They do also sell their baking pan (which is currently sold out on Amazon). I do think the GoWise site is very confusing in the way they have listed this accessory. The pricing doesn’t make sense. I would not buy that without contacting them to make sure exactly what I’m buying. Also look at those model numbers carefully. It may be one pan that fits all their air fryers, but you want to be sure to get one that fits.
That said, I can tell you that I own a Philips and I absolutely love the baking pan! It enables you to do SO much more with your air fryer. I think you will be shocked at how well baked goods turn out. Now, keep in mind that it is not huge. For the GoWise, that baking pan is round, and it measures 3″ deep and 6.5″ in diameter. You won’t be making a big pot of gumbo or giant casseroles. The Philips baking pan is not huge either (3″ deep and a little over 6″ square), but I use it all the time for everything from baking to sauteing a few onions for a recipe.
Another thing to note is that the baking pans that are made specifically for the air fryers have a handle on them. To me the Philips pan is pretty pricey, but after using it I realize it’s well worth the cost because without that handle it’s very hard to lift the hot pan out of the air fryer basket.

Hello, I am researching air fryers, read the comments…nobody has asked about wattage, is this not an import part of the decision process? The Philips is 1,800 watts which appears to be the max. Big Boss at 1,300 watts and Go Wise at 1,400 watts….Does wattage matter and if so, why? Better cooking, longevity, etc.

What can you tell me about the air fry feature of the Cusinart TOA-60 combo toaster/convection/air fryer??? I’m sorry I can’t speak from personal experience, and this model is relatively new so there is very little feedback available. Based on Amazon alone, it doesn’t look too good so far. I suggest you read the few reviews that are there, and be sure to read the comments on those reviews for additional info. (click here to go to Cuisinart reviews on Amazon)
You may also want to check out the Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air, which is similar. It’s more expensive, but it’s getting slightly better reviews so far.
To be honest I would not expect either of those ovens to give you the same quality results as a good air fryer such as the Philips. Generally speaking, you get the best performance from specialty appliances that are designed to do one thing and do it extremely well. Combo appliances are usually a compromise. That is, they give you more options, but by design they cannot perform as well on any one of those things. However, in some cases that compromise is worth it, like when you have only limited room in a very small kitchen.

Thanks for asking. I know one owner of the Power Air Fryer, and she’s had it only a few months but is happy so far. I’m in the process of reviewing that brand, and what I don’t like about it is the warranty. It’s only a 60 day warranty, and terms require that if warranty service is needed, customer must pay return shipping PLUS a $19.99 handling fee.
If I were buying the Power Air Fryer I’d order it from Amazon and also buy an extra protection plan just to be safe. But that’s just me.
Funny that I just wrote your exact words about getting sucked into infomercials. I have no intention of watching the things, yet before I know it I’m hooked. Unfortunately that doesn’t say a thing for the product. It just tells you they are masters at marketing. :)

It’s French. I went ahead and used it. Tried to cook shrimp I usually did in the oven. It took as long as it did in the oven! They were good and fully cooked but not as crisp as they are from the oven. I will try it one more time with something raw at the start to see if it really works. I have my doubts.
I did find their website, but they didn’t even mention the Air Fryer. Their big push is the convection oven.
